In the liner notes to 1964's Beatles for Sale, Derek Taylor made a prediction: "The kids of AD 2000 will understand what it was all about and draw from the music much the same sense of well-being and warmth as we do today. For the magic of The Beatles is timeless and ageless." At the time, pop stars had a limited shelf life of perhaps two years but sure enough, what he said in 1964 held true -- since its release in November 2000, 1 has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. Decade after decade, the music of The Beatles continues to captivate generation after generation.

Proving the simplest ideas are often the best, the compilation included every No. 1 Beatles single listed in the U.K. chart published by Record Retailer and Billboard's Hot 100. Fortunately, the 27 chart-toppers fit on a single CD, with just a few seconds of playing time to spare. For those keeping score, six songs were No. 1 in the U.K., eight topped the chart only in the U.S. ("Eight Days a Week," "Yesterday" and "The Long and Winding Road" were not released as singles in the U.K.), and 13 songs reached No. 1 in both countries.

The album sequences the singles in chronological order of the dates they were released. The U.S. fell under the spell of The Beatles a little late, so in 1964 "She Loves You" and "Love Me Do" follow the No. 1 breakthrough "I Want to Hold Your Hand." From "A Hard Day's Night" on, the world was in sync as it waited for the band's next single. We celebrate the group's achievements with their albums, but the release of a Beatles single was always a highly anticipated event. Listening to the singles on 1, you can hear the group's dazzling progression in performance, songwriting and recording.

Initially released on 7-inch vinyl, these songs have been heard over the years on a range of formats, including 8-track cartridges, analog cassettes, compact discs, and digital downloads. Now streaming on a device near you, the magic of The Beatles continues to be "timeless and ageless."
